Abstract : Theatre in Provence during the Consulate and Empire Great lover of tragedy and unrivaled stage manager of his own power, Napoléon Bonaparte sought to restore order to a theatrical life liberated and subverted by the Revolution. Both a powerful political medium and the scene of great passion, between the Consulate and the Empire the theatre became the ultimate center of entertainment. Far from the capital, in the heart of individual departments dramatic activity was rich, the programs reflected current tastes, and the daily life of theatre goers and professionals was especially animated. This study traces a clear geography of the diffusion of official culture, reconstructs the network of show halls, examines the finances of dramatic and lyrical companies, reconstructs a sociology of the principal theatre actors, sketches an outline of their repertories, and presents their effluence on the public mind, above and beyond their roles in the most simple but most pleasant of amusements.
