Sémantique des syncatégorèmes chez Gauthier Burley et Richard Brinkley

Abstract : The aim of the present paper is to describe the syncategoremes' genuine semantic contribution -- located between the mere lack of signification and the categoremes' complete or autonomous signification -- basing our work on some texts written by two 14th century realist philosophers. We will also consider the syncategoremes' relation to denominatives as well as to the copula, which will lead us to investigate the link existing between syncategoremes' semantics and propositional semantics. In conclusion, the hypothesis will be formulated that there is a " syncategorematic semantic regime " common to syncategoremes, denominatives and propositions, whose peculiarity is to show a binary structure including an " empty space " as an essential constituent.
