"Repères et nouvelles réflexions, Pierrefonds et le Hoh Koenigsburg. Introduction"

Abstract : As a discipline the history of art is challenged by the effort to integrate fully the word "production," referring both to workshop and to industrial production. In this volume, the structures of artistic production are examined by specialists of the medieval as well as the modern and contemporary periods, and traditional chronological categories become horizons to cross. The lines of research outlined in the Blaise Pascal University's "Center for History: 'Across Space and Culture'" four-year plan (2008-2011), as in the subsequent four-year plan, testify to this willingness to cross the conceptual and chronological limits imposed by disciplinary tradition. The restoration of art works and edifices produced during the medieval period implies questioning their authenticity and resisting assumptions that the works are period originals. As the processes of transmission, conservation, and restoration are not neutral, it is essential to reunite these scholars' papers to initiate a dialogue in which, for a time, "artistic production" rather than "artistic creation" is accented. Creation implies an emphasis on the individual, permanent promotion, and the self-glorification typical of elites. Production requires compromise and working in groups, yet without forgetting the individual, by guaranteeing space in the team or workshop to share training and insights. Restoration also implies a consciousness of the disappearance of a world, of its slow destruction or disfiguration. Simple maintenance is no longer possible and the production of restored works must be undertaken. Seen as such, the nineteenth century is an exemplary period in which we can see the consequences of the Revolution and the coming of the industrial era.
