This study proposes that, in composing his tragedy Dr Faustus, Christopher Marlowe had recourse to a French translation of the German Faustbuch made by P.-V. Palma-Cayet, of which certain traces remain recalling the Lutheran spirit of the original rather than the more Calvinist slant of the English translation recognised as the playwright's principal source.
