In this article, I analyze the interplay between two main features of the character of Abū Zayd al-Sarūğī in the Maqāmāt of al-Ḥarīrī: drunkenness and eloquence. I aim to show how the hero makes use of one and another feature to break the cultural order and how the distinctive links between the Arabic language and the sacred lead to the failure of this violation and hence to his final repentance.
