El investigador, el trabajo de campo y los datos a prueba de la comparación

Abstract : Although the comparison is a daily activity for most of the people, it is pretty much difficult to set out a protocol of comparison in social sciences. The core topics of the contribution relate with methodology of construction, and with practices of comparison and its implications. These thoughts are based on my own experience as a training French geographer on urban risks in Latin America since 2003, as well as on my physical and intellectual displacements between Europe and the Americas. Such original starting point takes the researcher's environment as well as the conditions that frame the production of knowledge into account. It allows introducing the analysis of different issues related with the comparison alternatively understood as an element in the researcher's toolbox, as an instrument of power, and as an opportunity of emancipation. Looking back to my training years as a researcher, the comparison appears to be much more than an ordinary "tool". It is a social and contingent construction, and has implications for the reality at stake, for the research process as well as for the researcher. Not only methodological but also epistemological and political concerns are part of the process of comparison and contribute to shape it.
