Laryngeal Behavior in Whispering Voice

Whisper voice is characterized by the lack of voicing and the presence of friction noise except during the closure phase of plosives. Segmental contrasts such as voicing tend to be preserved in whispered speech. Normal and whisper are simple phonation modes with a sound produced in the larynx and modulated by supralaryngeal articulatory adjustments. The objective of this preliminary study in French was to compare the laryngeal behavior of modal and whisper voice at the level of the glottis and at the level of the supraglottic region.
