Les journaux (1933 - 1945) et LTI de Victor Klemperer (1881 - 1960) : Les possibles stratégies de résistance au langage nazi

Abstract : Victor Klemperer (1881-1960) was a Jewish philologer from Germany and a specialist of the French Enlightenment. From 1920 to 1933 he was a professor at the Technical University of Dresden. After the publication of his private journals in 1999 and their translation into French in 2000, he became the symbol of clairvoyance, perspicacity and resistance against the language of the Nazis. His journals, which he kept up very faithfully during the period of Nazism, were a subversive space of expression. Our purpose is to analyse the many characteristics of this subversive form of writing. Although it was very difficult to escape the domination of Nazi discourse, it was not impossible to resist. For Victor Klemperer, to resist consisted not only in a psychological attitude; he also conceived of it as an ethical act, a true struggle of the spirit involving a critical reflection aimed at the violence of the racial laws and the domination of brute force. His aim was to attack inhumanity at its source; in other words, to do battle with language by and in that very language while holding all the while to the necessity of maintaining an authentic, precise and truthful position of enunciation.
