Les pisse-copie vus de Chavignolles. La presse périodique dans les dossiers de Bouvard et Pécuchet

Abstract : In this article, I study newspaper clips collected by Flaubert in his preparatory files for Bouvard et Pécuchet and address the reasons for their selection and the part they may have played in the "copy", should the second volume of the novel have been written. I distinguish between the articles that provide pure documentation (eg popular science articles), those that offer examples of stupidity or curious anecdotes and those which help drawing a self-portrait of nineteenth century media life. I focus on journalistic controversy, especially when it leads toward duel, and assume that Flaubert may have found in the way media produce text an operating model for his characters' "copy".
