On acoustic salience of vowels and consonants predicted from articulatory models

Résumé

A model is a simplified description of a complex system, it is not a goal per se, but a tool. Modeling is needed to apprehend complex phenomena, such as speech. Articulatory modelling allows to evaluate the separate contribution of individual parameters and the acoustic and perceptual consequences of large and small movements The model used here is Maeda's articulatory model. French vowels and consonants are synthesized. A model is derived, allowed to integrate the effects of the place of articulation of the surrounding phonemes, and anticipation and carry over effect, and the effect of the position of the phoneme within the syllabe and relatively to stress.
