Preface to the Indian Edition: Ideology and Status of Sanskrit: Contributions to the Sanskrit Language

This book is a new edition with new preface of a volume that was the outcome of a seminar on the Ideology and Status of Sanskrit held in 1994. It contains studies of crucial periods in the history of the Sanskrit language, from the earliest, Vedic and pre-Vedic periods, through the period in which the (restricted) use of Sanskrit spread over practically all of South and Southeast Asia, up to the recent history of Sanskrit in India. The aim of the book is to contribute especially to the social and sociolinguistic history of Sanskrit. The new preface discusses the implications of other and more recent studies in this domain.
Ce livre est une nouvelle édition avec nouvelle préface d'un volume qui a été le résultat d'un colloque sur l'idéologie et le statut du sanskrit qui a eu lieu en 1994. Il contient des études de périodes cruciales de l'histoire de la langue sanskrite, des périodes les plus anciennes, védique et pré-védique, à travers la période de l'utilisation (restreinte) du sanskrit dans la quasi-totalité de l'Asie du Sud et de l'Asie du Sud, jusqu'à l'histoire récente du sanskrit en Inde. Le but du livre est de contribuer en particulier à l'histoire sociale et sociolinguistique du sanskrit. La nouvelle préface aborde les implications d'autres études et d'études plus récents dans ce domaine.
