Grammar & Other Modes of the Mind

This article discusses a few marginal and two central lines of thought on grammar (from Patañjali, 2nd cent. BCE onwards), with regard to their reflections on the place of grammar in a larger framework of philosophical and religious thought. For the grammarian-philosopher Bhartrhari (5th-6th cent. CE), language has a universal, non-dual aspect which is identical with the self of the speaker, who has to try to bring to perfection his employment of the language in order to realize Brahman. For Nārāyaṇa-Bhaṭṭa (17th cent. CE), however, language and grammatical thought are "modes" of the mind that can be suspended or given up, just as other activities of the mind according to the system of yoga. God Krṣṇa and the complete Brahman are identified and can be implored to "find satisfaction" in the individual, which presupposes metaphysical dualism.
Cet article traite de quelques courants de la pensée en grammaire sanskrite (à partir de Patañjali, IIe siècle av. n.è.), quelques courants marginaux et deux courants centraux, et de leurs réflexions sur la place de la grammaire dans un cadre plus large de la pensée philosophique et religieuse. Pour le grammairien-philosophe Bhartrhari (Ve-VIe siècle de notre ère), la langue a un aspect universel et non-dualiste, qui est identique au soi de l'orateur, qui doit essayer son emploi de la langue à la perfection afin de réaliser le Brahman. Pour Narayana-Bhatta (XVIIe siècle), par contre, la langue et la pensée grammaticale sont des " modes " de l'esprit qui peuvent être suspendues ou abandonnées, tout comme d'autres activités de l'esprit selon le système du yoga. Dieu Krṣṇa et le Brahman complet sont identifiés et peuvent être imploré pour "trouver satisfaction" dans l'individu. Ceci présuppose un dualisme métaphysique.
