Fuir la campagne, mourir dans la ville : errer avec Su Tong

Abstract : Su Tong's novels take place either in the city or the countryside, two different but complementary settings. The countryside is an unbearable location, synonymous with famine and poverty. This is what leads its denizens to flee, to go into exile in order to survive. The city in Su Tong's novels can be identified with death, with accidents, in short, all that is linked to the impulsion and incapacity of men to master their destiny. The dramatical aspect of the city is exposed in Chengbei didai, a novel which translates magnificently the author's fascination for death, a way out also for those who run away from the countryside, like the characters in Yijiu sansi nian de taowang.
