Expression et position du sujet pronominal en français : évolution en français

Abstract : Modern French greatly differs not only from other Romance languages but also from Old French with regard to the position and the expression of pronominal subjects. In this paper we try to provide some explanations for the specificity of the postverbal position, and for the way it has evolved, partly in connexion with its expression. In particular, we underline the necessity of taking into account the relation of the utterance with the preceding context, which is in fact a decisive factor in determining the position of the subject. Then we consider the evolution of pronominal subjects in the framework of grammaticalization, and we finally set the developement of 'subject-verb' sequences in the context of the more general evolution of French, in comparison with other Romance langages.
