La traduction au coeur de l'analyse linguistique : l'exemple de la traduction non interjective des interjections

Abstract : The aim of this study is to analyse a specific case of translation, in which a source-text interjection is transformed into another form of various nature in the target-text. Starting from the data provided by a 1,200-strong collection of translated interjections (600 from French into English and 600 from English into French), I examine whether such transformation applies primarily a particular type of interjection, in which proportion and in which language. The question also rises of its major linguistic implications: if interjection had a really marginal behaviour how can one account for the very possibility of moving from a 'less linguistic' element to a 'more linguistic' element while keeping the same meaning as the original form? Besides, how does the 'more linguistic' and often longer translated form contribute to unveil the operating mode of interjections that is based upon loop, by making explicit the links between interjection and speech context and the way in which the host sentence is organised?
