The plan to reconcile the "two Spains" which may be traced back to 1976, is filled with contradictions.It is marked by an internal conflict between the desire to skim over contradictory pages of the past and the need to satisfy the public's demands for the application of retrospective justice to Franco-era crimes. A new "grammar of reconciliation" was launched in 2007. However, the process of creating a consensual version of national history has turned out to be extraordinarily difficult.
