Identificação e avaliação da diversidade dos tipos de exploração dos meios na Amazônia Oriental

Abstract : This paper aims to modify some ideas of the evolution of the Amazonian frontiers. Usually, the rapid development of cattle ranching is seen as a consequence of the predominance of economic logic and soil poverty. It is supposed to lead to a land tenure concentration and a rapid degradation of the environment. This paper addresses the conditions for the sustainability of family agriculture in Amazonia, by considering the diversity of the Amazonian biophysical environments along with the socio-economics and skills of the populations using the natural resources. We find that the technical knowledge is influenced by the personal history of each farmer, while the diversity of skills and practices has an impact on the methods of management of the vegetation cover. In this way, we propose that this diversity is taken into account when future analysis of the sustainability of agricultural activity is made.
