Texte et contexte dans la création d'une image de la ville - Los Angeles dans la série Harry Bosch

Abstract : The relationship between image and the public space is particularly obvious in literary works, and especially so in detective novels, which rely on an imaginative rendering of urban life to place the action in particular cities, whose image in turn is partly shaped by these novels. While the image of the city constructed in the novel cannot be grasped without taking into account the rules and codes of the crime genre, the ability to sense the link between image and the public space also depends on a three-way relationship between the author, the city and the authorities representing the city. In this article, through a study of a crime series by Michael Connelly set in Los Angeles and featuring Inspector Harry Bosch as a hero, we show that the liberties the author takes with the rules of the crime novel allow him to create meaning, and the highly original character of this Los Angeles policeman in particular, but that the meaning cannot be grasped unless we bear in mind the relationships between the author and the Los Angeles Police Department, particularly as the series has been published over a long period and therefore implies reflection on the part of the author on the effect produced by his novels on the image of Los Angeles.
