Deux transpositions de Marivaux au cinéma

Plays adapted for movies allow us to reflect on the relationship between theatre and cinema, and raise the eternal issue of the adaptation. If we compare two very different films, produced from two Marivaux's comedies, The False Servant (by Benoît Jacquot in 2000) and Triumph of Love (by Clare Peploe in 2001), we can analyse the sense and coherence of the screen version, in terms of fidelity, ethics and aesthetics. Do we find in these films Marivaux's authenticity and wit? Does the result correspond to Marivaux's thinking, is it faithful to his ethics and to the features of his theatre, and more specifically, to his concept of representation? Are they true screen versions, or filmed theatre? Does the film director think that it is cinema at the service of theatre, or theatre at the service of cinema?
Les pièces théâtrales portées à l'écran permettent de nous pencher sur les rapports entre théâtre et cinéma, et de soulever l'éternelle question de l'adaptation. En comparant deux films très différents, réalisés à partir de deux comédies de Marivaux, La Fausse Suivante (par Benoît Jacquot en 2000) et Le Triomphe de l'amour (par Clare Peploe en 2001), on peut s'interroger sur le bien-fondé et la cohérence de l'adaptation, en termes de fidélité, d'éthique et d'esthétisme. Retrouve-t-on dans ces films l'authenticité, la comicité marivaudiennes ? Le résultat correspond-il à la pensée de Marivaux, est-il fidèle à son éthique et aux caractéristiques de son théâtre, en particulier à sa conception de la représentation? S'agit-il d'adaptations cinématographiques proprement dites, ou de théâtre filmé ? Le réalisateur envisage-t-il le cinéma au service du théâtre, ou le théâtre au service du cinéma ?
