Par-delà le rouge et le noir : les situationnistes et l'héritage du mouvement ouvrier

Abstract : Amongst the intellectual movements that tried, during the second part of the twentieth century, to give an extension to the marxist and libertarian revolutionnary traditions, situationnists are a very special case. Indeed, they claimed to inspire from this traditions, with their renewed criticism of capitalism as well as their refusal of all sorts of hierarchy, and in the same time the claimed to go beyond the antagonism between anarchism and marxism. We will first expose how the ambition to go beyond the opposition between black and red finds expression, for what concerns theory and philosophy, in a return before the differenciation between black and red, and more precisely in an use (in particular by Debord) of the concepts and the themes of the Young Hegelians movement - a movement by which Marx as well as Bakunin have passed. The most brilliant signs of such a tendance are the stress put on the alienation and the use of the hegelian lexicon of the negative. We will describe the way situationnists criticize the separation between marxism and anarchism as a separation that is proper to a particular historical situation in the workers movement. This is mostly clear about anarchism, about which situationnists claimed that it ceased to exist in Barcelona in 1937. We will also recall how situationnists tried to promote a political practice beyond this opposition, in particular during the french events of May and June 1968 when they put the stress on the unofficial general strike, on self-management and on the occupations movement. We will conclude by asking if the situationnist diagnosis that the opposition between black and red is superseded is still valid. The simple fact that the situationnist criticism of revolutionnary organizations has still its actuality is maybe the sign that black has still much to say to red.
