Le contrôle migratoire aux frontières Schengen : Pratiques et représentations des polices sur la ligne tchéco-autrichienne

Abstract : This article relies on an ethnographic observation of the practices of control deployed on the Czech-Autrian border between 2004 and 2007 - when it was still an external Schengen border. The paper aims at putting into perspective the national policies concerning the visibility of border control on the one hand, and the local practices of police control and cooperation on the other. Beyond discourses presenting border controls as implacable and transnational cooperation as a pillar for border security, local practices show a more malleable reality as well as the materiality that national limits still have in the representation of police professionals: far from signifying a diminution of controls, the removal of the Schengen border between Austria and the Czech Republic at the end of 2007 seems therefore to take place within a broader context of displacement and redefinition of forms of control and confinement of unwanted foreigners.
