Wissen, Arbeit, Freundschaft: Ökonomien und soziale Beziehungen in den Akademien von London, Paris und Berlin um 1700

Abstract : Practice of natural-history research had a lot to do with collective formations, for example with work, but also with hostility or friendship. Economies and social relations are investigated which are responsible for creating what could afterwards be called knowledge. Taking the Royal Society of London, the Académie des Science in Paris and the Societät der Wissenschaften in Berlin as a starting point, this study examines cultural practices and social codes of action of natural history's knowledge production. Main stress is not put on institutions, but on logics of action of quite different persons which were involved in knowledge production. What finally should be knowledge, how it is to be produced and verified - was not determined solely by a group of appointed experts, but it was continuously negotiated among very different persons involved. Accordingly, logics of relation play a decisive role, both for the persons involved and for the constitution of knowledge and objects of knowledge. As a result, history of sciences is opened up for social, economic and cultural history, in which analytical categories (what is knowledge, what is a scholar, what is a scientific institution?) will be historicized and given dynamism.
