Conseils pour l'édition des documents en langue italienne (XIVe-XVIIe siècle)

Abstract : A contribution to the harmonising of editorial practices among historians and philologists, this article summarises a number of criteria for editing (or simply quoting) Italian vernacular documents from the late medieval, Renaissance and early modern periods, together with a few thoughts on some neglected or yet unsettled points. The following aspects are discussed : paleographical issues, abbreviations, word separation, diacritics and punctuation, Latin and foreign words introduced into Italian, and cryptography. Appended is a dictionary of ca. 500 common abbreviations. The article is aimed especially at non-native speakers of Italian.
