L'enclitique -i introducteur de relative en persan : Déterminant, allomorphe de l'ezāfe, ou autre chose encore ?

Abstract : Persian grammars mention two distinct homonymous nominal enclitics realized by the vowel -i. The first one is generally analyzed as an indefinite article, while the second, which occurs exclusively with restrictive relative clauses, is considered to be a definite or demonstrative article. Since the late 1950's however there have been several attempts to elaborate a unified analysis for these enclitics. It has been thus argued that both -i could be considered as a 'selective' or 'restrictive' determiner. A different analysis has been put forward in a recent study, which maintains the distinction between the two enclitics, considering the first one as an indefinite article, but proposes instead to consider the one which occurs wsith restrictive relatives as an allomorph of the Ezāfe vowel. In this paper, I claim that none of these two positions are empirically adequate. I will thus maintain the distinction between the two enclitics, considering the first one as an indefinite article, but contrary to the grammatical tradition, the second enclitic -i will be analyzed not as a definite determiner, but as a linking morpheme. However unlike the Ezāfe vowel, which is semantically vacuous, the enclitic -i triggers an 'intersective' reading.
