Finanzielle Unterstützung von Familien in Deutschland und Frankreich. Hat Frankreich für erwerbstätige Mütter die Nase vorn?

Abstract : Even though in comparison to other European countries Germany and France are quite similar in economic, political and institutional terms, fertility rates and women's full-time equivalent employment rates are singificanlty lower in Germany than in France. Insufficient child care facilities in Germany are often cited as main reason for these differences. This article shows that differences in the system of financial assistance to families also contribute significanlty to the fact that in Germany, family and work are more difficult to reconciliate than in France. The article discusses the main differences in the four instuments of financial assistance to families in both countries (lump-sum benefits for children, parental leave benefits, financial assistance reducing the costs of childcare and the taxation of family income) and illustrates how the combination of these instruments discourages mothers' labour supply in Germany more than in France.
