The inter-Korean border region - 'meta-border' of the Cold War and metamorphic frontier of the peninsula

Abstract : The chapter discusses the post-Korean war transformations of the inter-Korean border, and their relationship with the inter-Korean dialog. The development of a multilayered border region including several Northern or Southern enclaves expresses larger changing territorial dynamics within and around the peninsula, which characterized the Sunshine Policy era (1998-2007). The analysis of the geographic structure of the border region and its genesis gives way to a fresh interpretation of the closing of the inter-Korean border after 2008.
