" Caius Lucretius [...], marchand de couleurs de la rue des fabricants de courroies ". Réflexions critiques sur les concentrations de métiers à Rome

Abstract : Despite a persistent lack of definition, clustering is popular among scholars studying productive spaces in the Roman world. At first developed from examples taken in Rome, using topographical indications mentioned in funerary epigraphy, this 'theory' became popular in the study of the whole of the Empire, introducing the concept of " quartiers artisanaux " (production districts) which implied that part of the city was only devoted to production. After introducing some concepts inherited from urban geography, I will offer a critical analysis of epitaphs describing the location of shopkeepers and craftsmen. Within the 138 inscriptions examined here, recurrent formulations allow to draw a few hypothesis about what prompted practitioners in mentioning their workspace. Thus, the idea of " quartier " has only to be reconnected to the neighborhood perceived as a living space and would include the whole urban landscape. As for production, if clustering appears to be a 'workable' concept, it needs further interpetation to make sense.
