The Look and Feel of Luxury
Abstract
High fashion is characterized not only by its inventive and unique designs, but also by the aesthetic and technical innovations of its luxury fabrics. Historian at France's National Center for Scientific Research Florence Charpigny, Ph.D., discusses the relationship between the French silk industry and 20th-century Parisian fashion houses like Dior and Balenciaga. Based on the textile collections at the Musée des Tissus in Lyon and oral histories from former silk manufacturers, she looks at the goals of their collaboration with haute couture, the process of fabric creation and the original economic pattern they developed.
