Figures spatiales émergentes : la ville aux frontières de l'impensé

Abstract : The article explores new formal components in the contemporary territory which we call "figures", resurrecting a term once borrowed by architectural and urban theorists from gestaltist psychology. By "figure" we wish to signify an entity designated by an observer based on his/her sensory experience. Our objective is to examine the tendancy of the territory to produce forms which bear little or no correspondance to those that have historically characterized the city. We analyse the way in which - individually or collectively - we "point to" or designate new formal entities as being there while being unable to describe them clearly or to name them precisely. We propose ways of developing an interdisciplinary reflexivity with respect to these entities which is intended to facilitate our collective understanding and elaboration of them, based on a form of collective writing that we have named the "polyvocal monograph".
