" ACTIVATION " ET " SAILLANCE " D'UNITÉS GRAMMATICALES. QUELLE PLACE POUR L'INTONATION DANS LA CONSTRUCTION DYNAMIQUE DU SENS ?

Abstract : The hypothesis presented in this paper aims at distinguishing two types of linguistic units in the dynamic construction of meaning, the units that have an active role in the semantic regulation of the sentence (called " active " units and noted Ua) and the units that are not only active but also prominent on the prosodic level (called " salient " units and noted Us). According to this hypothesis, an active unit (an entity or a process) takes part directly in the construction of meaning (in writen or oral sentences), as for example grammatical words. A salient unit also takes part in the construction of meaning of the sentence, but what it more, it is a unit that contributes to the evolution of the verbal scene evoked by the sentence on the cognitive level. The analysis of a salient unit like the English adverb " always " for intance shows that such a unit evokes a dimension of the verbal scene, which an active unit does not evoke. The example of always shows that a salient unit concentrates a large part of the meaning construction, thanks to its schematic form and its prosodic prominence. In this model, intonation acquires a specific role, ie. an instructional role; intonative prominence can be defined as a specific instruction of " verbal staging ". This instruction consists in making salient entities and processes, and more precisely in making salient their respective roles in the construction of meaning of the sentence. Thus some elements (entities or processes) are considered as " centers of perceptive attention " (Lacheret 2003) on the verbal scene, which has two consequences: the subdivision of the scene, on the cognitive level, and on the linguistic level, the redistribution of the predication on the salient units.
