Les héritages socialistes à l'épreuve des dynamiques urbaines à Varsovie : entre "banalisation" et patrimonialisation

Abstract : The paper analyses how in Poland, urban forms, inherited from the beginning of the socialist period, which can be emblematic places of the Popular Republic (such as the Palace of the Culture, administrative buildings) or ordinary ones (cultural, commercial buildings), were integrated by the transformations of the post-socialist city. These spatial dynamics are collected through the term of " banalization ". This means the setting up of a distance, thanks to the indifferenciation, and functional transformation of these places. Secondly it means their invisibilisation through an architectural profusion and the merchandization of the urban environment. Thirdly, banalization may occur through de conversion of " stalinistic " buildings to touristic uses. Banalization of buildings leads sometimes to their destruction, especially if they had no political dimension (cinemas, supermarkets). In Warsaw, such destructions, often supplanted by more profitable investments, gave rise to a movement of defence from the architects; thus the question of the" patrimonialization" of socialist legacies swept through the public opinion in the years 2000, and a law was voted to that effect. At least, the paper wonders about the banalization dynamics and the patrimonialization reactions that they created. More widely, it opens a reflexion about the contribution of these legacies to the building of a common memory in Poland.
