Politiques publiques d'installation et célibat des agriculteurs

Abstract : This article investigates the relation between bachelorhood and setting up as a farmer in French rural zones. To which extent does matrimonial factors do impact on the decline of the number of the farms? Is the strong rate of bachelors among young farmers an incentive against setting up on farm? We claim that the policy of the agricultural setting up did not realize its objective because it did not take in account the difficulty for a farmer to find a sentimental settled relation. Using a data extract from the French census and exploiting a poll conduced among 588 farmers the authors show that bachelorhood explains better than income the decrease of the number of farms. They explain also why this cause is underestimated by the agricultural trade unions and the policy makers.
