Abstract

This limestone altar from the Roman period has been discovered on BEY 127, out of its archaeological context, holding a 5 lines dedicatory inscription in latin to Mercurius Heliopolitanus, which is the third of this kind we know in Beirut so far. Caius Iulius Hermes Cinnamus, the dedicator, says his offering has been done at Apollo's instigation. Though this latter god does'nt belong to the Baalbeck triad, also worshipped in Beirut, such an association has already been pointed out and this dedicatory inscription is to be characterised as “god-made” or “god-inspired”. Iulius is quite a common gentilis in Berytus, an Augustan Roman colony, and both cognomina may indicate their holder to be whether a military who was granted citizenship when leaving service, or a greco-eastern former slave having been freed. As a matter of fact, professionals from both social categories can work as land surveyors, as indicated by the last word “geometra”. This text could possibly be dated back to the IInd century
