Du grand lider Stroessner (1954-1989) au Karai Tendota Nicanor Duarte Frutos (2003-2009)

Abstract : A new term emerged on the Paraguayan political scene since 2003 : tendota. A guarani word interpreted by some like meaning « guide » and by others like « dictator ». This article raises and analyzes words of power, their symbolic system and their use in the relations mediatized at the national level but especially in the local interpersonal relations, thanks to an ethnographic study. In this bilingual country, the disappearance, erosion and resemantisation of spanish and guarani words reveals an effective demilitarization of the semantic field of the authority. The image of the providential man remains however central, on all the levels.
