Le portail de Santa Maria da Vitória de Batalha (Portugal) ou l'art européen à ses confins

Abstract : The main portal of the Dominican convent in Batalha has for some time been an enigma within the Portuguese monumental panorama of the end of the Middle Ages. No precedent, no earlier example seems to havec prepared for this sculptural ensemble, innovative in terms of iconography as well as style. Since the end of the 18th cenury, Portuguese art historians have come up against the exogenous character of this break in the artistic development of the Lusitanian kingdom, without being able to assign a definite source to it. Yet an attentive look at the architectural dispositions of the monument and a precise analysis of the statuary of this portal lead to the proposition of nex hypotheses for the chronology of the work, the nature of the iconographic program, as well as for the provenance of the construction workshops.
