These two chapers about France answer the general issue defined for the whole book. They have been written by a team with the coordination of Nadine Vivier The book , Social Relations, Property and Power ,aims at a synthesis of our knowledge about rural societies, presented in one chapter for each country. It looks at the vital questions: who owned the land? Who gained the profits from its exploitation? The changes inside rural societies all through centuries came from the tension and negotiation between lords and peasants, and the growing importance of the state and its policies. The book also looks at external changes such as the rise and fall of the market, the European integration.
Les deux chapitres sur la France répondent à la problématique générale de l'ouvrage. Ils ont été écrits par une équipe coordonnée par Nadine Vivier Ce volume consacré aux relations sociales, propriété et pouvoir, offre une synthèse de nos connaissances actuelles sur ce sujet, présentées en un chapitre par pays bordant la mer du Nord. Il répond aux questions essentielles : qui possédait la terre ? Qui tirait les bénéfices de son exploitation ? Les changements depuis l'an 500 jusqu'à aujourd'hui résultent des tensions et négociations entre seigneurs et paysans, puis de l'influence croissante de l'État et ses politiques. Le livre aborde aussi les changements externes à la société rurale, tel la puissance du marché, l'intégration européenne.
