Pantomime, tragédie et patrimoine littéraire sous l'Empire

At a distance of two centuries (Iid and IVth c. A.D.), Lucian and Libanios proposed apologies of the pantomime whose main argument relied on the age-old implanting of the genre in the dramatic landscape of Antiquity. The "tragic dance" is thus presented as an extension of the noble Greek and Latin tragedy. The present article is concerned with defining the precise nature of the link that may have existed between tragedy and pantomime. The ballets in imperial times, acknowledgedly derived from the practices of the mime would indeed relinquish the dramatic form of tragedy and show themselves as gestural narratives. The link with tragedy was not founded on the continuity of the genres and modes of representation, which this new category of performances profoundly disturbed, but on a resumption of ancient values. Pantomime shows partook of the imperial transmission of a literary and mythological patrimony and, beyond, a culture common to the Greeks and Latins of imperial times.

Lucien et Libanios ont proposé, à deux siècles d'intervalle, (IIe et IVe s. ap. J.C.) des défenses de la pantomime dont l'argumentation reposait en grande partie sur le principe d'un enracinement ancien du genre dans le paysage dramatique antique. La "danse tragique" est ainsi présentée comme un prolongement de la noble tragédie grecque et latine. Le présent article s'attache à définir la nature précise du lien qui pouvait exister entre tragédie et pantomime. Ces ballets d'époque impériale, issus comme on le sait des pratiques du mime, abandonnaient en effet la forme dramatique de la tragédie et se présentaient comme des récits gestuels. Le lien avec la tragédie n'était pas fondé sur une continuité des genres et des modes de représentation que cette nouvelle catégorie de spectacles bouleversait profondément, mais sur un retour à des valeurs anciennes. Les spectacles de pantomime participaient de la transmission impériale d'un patrimoine littéraire et mythologique et, au-delà, d'une culture commune aux Grecs et aux Latins d'époque impériale.
