D. H. Hymes, vers une pragmatique et une anthropologie communicationnelle

Abstract : Considering communication from an anthropological viewpoint, Dell Hathaway Hymes (1927) introduced the language in action – verbal and non verbal – within the sociolinguistic analysis. The study of language, considered as a social and cultural behaviour, goes from “ethnography of speech” (centered on linguistic variation and pragmatics) to ethnography of communication. Theoretical and methodological approaches, based on field analysis, are therefore proposed, opening the way towards a pragmatics and a communicational anthropology.
