Abstract : Initially confined to technical questions about safety, today's thinking about personal data covers sociological and political stakes. The personalization of information is forcing us to redefine the individual as a collection of traces, and communication as commerce of singularities. It involves submitting all content to a system of prescription, whereby power is measured by the capacity to cross-compile the data left scattered by users on the Internet. Broken up and processed, an individual is hardly able to control his “digital shadow”. Exhibiting oneself on social networks is well related, however, to strategies that testify to a desire for re claiming. Instead of leaving users to themselves or supervising them in the name of ambiguous security logic, public authorities and political officials should put in place mediation procedures for this digital presence. To restore trust and to define the rights of the homo numericus are indeed preconditions to the exercise of democracy.
