Thinking topographically about the landscape around Besançon (Doubs, France)

This poster was presented at the 2010 Landscape Archaeology Conference in Amsterdam (26-28 January) by Laure Nuninger and Rachel Opitz. It shows some early results from the archaeological study of a lidar survey conducted around Besançon (Franche-Comté, France). This survey is part of the LIEPPEC project, a new multidisciplinary study of the landscape surrounding and shaping this centre, which has been urbanized since the Iron Age. The area surrounding Besancon now largely forested, resulting in a dependence on the interpretation of the lidar model to guide field prospection. The poster focuses on the history of two areas: one forested (Forêt de Chailluz) and one regularly inundated (Marais Saone), where traces of past activities are apparent. These discoveries provoke methodological and thematic questions. A recursive process between the results of fieldwalking and the manipulation of the lidar model allows us to explore the interpretation of microtopography in archaeological and geomorphological terms.
