Nouveau statut de l'instrument de musique en France au XIXe siècle dans les expositions nationales et universelles

Abstract : During the XIXth century, the market economy set musical instruments among industrial products at the time when the orchestra itself is considered as a kind of instrument, when makers are doing serious efforts to improve or invent new instruments to satisfy private or public musical practice. In this context, a national or international exhibition is an ideal observation's field. Reports written on exhibited instruments bring as many informations concerning current instruments as for innovative ones. These texts, written by well-known musicians or specialists commissioned by the French government (François-Joseph Fétis, Adrien de La Fage, Hector Berlioz, le comte de Pontécoulant, Gustave Chouquet, Constant Pierre, etc.) are not only descriptive. They allow to follow the evolution of instrument building in its continuation and to have the first comparative analysis with the different foreign schools of instrument making. Within such considerations, a research project and a critical edition of these reports were undertaken. We will make every effort to put the instrumental innovations in the perspective of playing situation and the soloist or collective musical practice, indicating how and when composers possibly integrated them in their works. This methodology will allow to capture the instrument « in movement » in all the different aspects of his sonorous function. A part from the important contribution to the history of instrument making in 19th century France from a technological and economical point of view, this project is crossing the problematic of sonority, the anthropology of practice and the history of taste.
