La relation école-emploi bousculée par l'orientation

Abstract : Can one still ask a young person what “job he wants to do when he grows up”? Does this question still have any meaning if it does not form part of a more global approach? What should the school's mission be, to encourage the success not only of each pupil, but also that of the socially and professionally well-integrated adults that they aspire to become? While no-one can fail to note the naivety of such questions, the singular acuity with which they are being asked, at a time when professional integration is suffering from an uncertain globalised economic situation, is very real. This issue offers an international panorama of public policies helping to bring together school and employment and an educational approach to career guidance. The relationship between school and employment is first analyzed in the light of the public policies encouraged by the OECD and European authorities. Next the combined efforts of international and European organizations to encourage the development of lifelong guidance (a term now used in preference to counselling). The third part concentrates on the “career management skills”, the frames of reference for competency, and provides a panorama of the teaching approaches that have been designed over the last twenty years. The final part presents the measures rolled out in secondary education in selected countries: Germany, Denmark, Canada, the United Kingdom and France.
