Remarques provisoires sur les "ruptures scolaires" des collégiens de familles populaires

Abstract : Preliminary remarks concerning the reasons why pupils from working class families break off their relations with school This article is based on ongoing research concerning pupils from lower working class backgrounds who are in a situation of refusal towards school. It presents some elements of analysis of the paths and configurations which lead to this situation. We study simultaneously the family histories, school careers and the relations within the pupils' peer groups in an attempt to understand how these dimensions combine and produce particular relations with school learning and the school order. Firstly we present the population under study as a whole (lower secondary school pupils from poor urban families placed in care in the "dispositifs-relais") and then describe certain social and educational features characteristic of the school careers of the pupils under study.
