Les récits de conversion : d'une histoire personnelle romancée à l'analyse sociologique d'un engagement religieux

Abstract : In this article, the author proposes to discuss contributions and limits of the biographical method applied to his Phd research, Religious Conversions. Three questions are successively tackled: how to think, through the individual story, the necessary “generalizing process” to place stories back in a sociological perspective? Which status a sociologist using an understanding methodology can be applied to converts who are totally self-committed in interviews? Lastly, which importance to grant to their testimonies, following the ethical imperative both of the respect of the converts' credibility and scientific requirements? Three topics are approached to answer these questions: the way to access the social through the individual, the possible transformation of interviewees into authors and the use of variations of scales, contexts and temporalities to put the stories of conversion in perspective. The discussion follows a concrete and pragmatic mode, i.e. starting from the questionings put to the author during his research
