Les ajustements auditifs des auditeurs-baladeurs. : Instabilités sensorielles entre écoute de la musique et de l'espace sonore urbain

Abstract : Social agents who walk with music (produced through earphones) in urban public space — the walking listeners — attempt not only to isolate themselves from all the noises and sounds which characterize the city. The ecological approach used here allows us to demonstrate that while auditive isolation is one of the reasons for their listening to music, paying attention to some of the surrounding noises is important as well. This propensity to pay attention to their environments is expressed through passing glances at sonic spurts which clearly make their way to their ears but also through the withdrawal of earphone(s) in order to hear sounds potentially relevant for the successful realization of their walk. They manifest in this way a sensory torque, that is to say an instability between two sensory commitments : between the commitment toward a solitary activity (listening to music, and sometimes reading, etc.), and the commitment toward the urban sonic environment. When understood in this way, the ear reveals an ability, much like the eye's, to select information : to close itself down to input at some times (because of noises), and to open itself up at other times (because of potentially relevant auditive information).
