LE SITE NÉOLITHIQUE DE ROUAZI À SKHIRAT (MAROC): CONTEXTE STRATIGRAPHIQUE ET ÉVOLUTION MORPHO-DYNAMIQUE DE SON ENVIRONNEMENT LITTORAL

Abstract : The site of Rouazi at Skhirat contains a large necropolis as well as the remains of a human settlement, both testifying to a significant middle Neolithic occupation of the coastal Moroccan Meseta. Geological work conducted here allows the stratigraphic context of the settlement to be defined and its Holocene environment to be described. This work also provides detailed information on the morphological evolution of this littoral area. The Neolithic settlement was placed on the coastline's backshore, close to a braided river mouth, during a period of relative coastline stability. This littoral zone records three main Holocene evolutionary phases. These correspond, first, to a rapid rise of sea level (to ca 7000 BC), then to coastline stabilization as a result of rapid sedimentation (from ca 7000 to less than 2500 cal BC) and, finally, to a decline in sea level. This general evolution probably occurred in concert with a general uplift of the area along with southward tilting of the structural block on which it lies.
