L'idée de nation: du postulat de Marcel Mauss à la question actuelle des identités nationales et culturelles

Abstract : Marcel Mauss' concept of nation is compared with current questions of national and cultural identity in Europe, from case studies in political contemporary history: building of Southeast European nations and current status of immigrants in Western Europe, with particular reference to France. Marcel Mauss considered the nation as society par excellence, the kind of higher social organisation reached first by the Europeans. This pattern is no long any more reliable and nation like civilisation are no given as granted. The example of Albanian nation-building shows that independence doesn't coincide necessarily with the people area which could claim. On the other hand, if identity construction is realised through cultural traits, motivations less noble than national pride could push to self-legitimisation in other circumstances. The example of French-Algerian identity splitting shows the difficulty to put together social values of different origins. Finally, the concepts of nation, nationalism and citizenship should be interpreted as identity constructions rather than in a political and legal meaning. It is then important to conciliate historical, socio-political and anthropological approaches of interethnic relationships and cross-cultural values.
