LE CALIFE ‘UMAR B. ‘ABD AL-‘AZĪZ ET LES POÈTES

Abstract : We try in this article to highlight the relations between the eighth Umayyad caliph, 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, and the poets of his time. We draw on documents and on various tales from books including, “al-Shi'r wa-l-shu'arâ”', the famous book from the Abbassid scholar, Ibn Qutayba (d.889) and from the equally famous, “Kitâb al-Aghani” by al-Isfahani (d. 967).
We ask: was this caliph especially interested in poetry? Did he even know about it? What were his thoughts about poetry? Did he enjoy a particular genre? Were there any poets in his court and what kind of relationship did he maintain with them? Did his attitude to poetry and poets change over the course of his lifetime? These are the questions we will try to answer in this article, after a brief presentation of the life of a ruler whom people consider the fifth ‘righteous' caliph.
