APPORT DE LA POLARIMÉTRIE RADAR À LA COHÉRENCE INTERFÉROMÉTRIQUE : APPLICATION À LA FORÊT TROPICALE DE TAPAJÓS, BRÉSIL

Abstract : Synthetic Aperture Radar ( SAR ) interferometry is a technique for elevation extraction. It is based on the estimation of phase difference of radar signal between two images acquired on the same area from slightly different viewing angles. The phase difference between the two images is related to terrain height and is used for Digital Elevation Models ( DEM ) generation. The quality of this phase is evaluated using the coherence parameter which quantifies the correlation between the two images. In parallel to interferometry which uses a fixed polarisation and generally a unique frequency,
SAR polarimetry allows discrimination of intrinsic properties of radar target exploiting different polarisations. Correlation optimisation between the two images can be obtained by polarimetry and interferometry combination. This new approach is called PolInSAR technique. The work that we present consists in considering two methods to improve the interferometric phase. We propose a first method, that consists in generating coherences from couple of images in the lexicographic basis. According to the obtained coherences in this basis, the coherence of maximum magnitude and the associated interferometric phase have been retained. A second traditional method is implemented: it is about the maximization of the coherence, based on a decomposition in eigenvalues/eigenvectors. This method gives the maximum module of coherence that it can be reached mathematically, but it is also much more difficult in implementation. We evaluate and compare the results of these two methods, on the coherences obtained, as well as on the interferometric phases. SAR images used in this paper have been acquired at P band over the forest of Tapajós in Brazil.
