La fabrication des ambiances souterraines : présence du public et configurations sensibles (voir et entendre)

Abstract : The objective of our communication is to show how ambiant phenomenons (sound and light) characterize underground space and how these particularities question its use as public space. We have therefore conducted a pluridisciplinary research on the constitution and role of sonic and aero-thermic environment and ambiant light in the underground milieu. It is based on the study of the Louvre (Carousel) and Halles in Paris during the years 1994-1995 -In our quotes and data, the letters L and H respectively refer to the Louvre and to the Halles-. For this purpose, we have conducted "parcours commentés" (walker's verbal observations) with users of those two places and as well as to physical measurments. From this considerable empirical corpus, we have drawn conclusions as to the pluridisciplinary method which must be developed in order to apprehend the urban environment and describe the specific character of underground public space. Whatever the architectural and technical means employed to create and master environment, it seems important to consider the limits inposed and the question raised by underground space as public space.
